Location:
Maryland

Open to Montgomery County educators grades k-12

What do Montgomery County and Smith Island have in common? Both are communities located within the Chesapeake Bay Watershed connected through water! Join the Lathrop E. Smith Environmental Education Center for a unique professional learning opportunity as we spend five days exploring connections to our watershed. Participants will begin the week downstream on Smith Island, investigating this unique waterman's community situated in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay. For the second half of the week, participants will use their knowledge from Tangier to make connections between our daily activities, the ecology of the Potomac River, and the Chesapeake Bay. Work aboard a research vessel on the Potomac River, canoe along the brackish marshes of the Bay, and create your own "shed stories" while learning from your peers and having fun!

Length & Location: 5 days total. 3 days, 2 nights at CBF’s Smith Island Environmental Education Center followed by 2 local investigation days within Montgomery County.
Cost: $50 resource fee.
Credit: Maryland teachers are eligible for 3 Continuing Professional Development (CPD) credits from MSDE for successful course completion. MSDE Course Title: Chesapeake Classrooms Field Course; MSDE/CPD Number: 15-66-07
