Reef Ball Build

Thursday, April 25, 2019
9:00 AM - 3:00 PM
CBF's Maryland Oyster Restoration Center
4800 Atwell Road
Shady Side, MD 20764

Come help the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, Arundel Rivers Federation, and Coastal Conservation Association build critical oyster habitat and help restore the Chesapeake Bay! Over the course of several days, we will construct molds, pour concrete, and "hatch" them from their molds—creating newly cast artificial reef structures known as "reef balls" for use in a unique oyster restoration project.

April 25—Constructing molds and pouring concrete
April 26—Hatching previous day's molds, constructing new molds and pouring concrete
April 27—Hatching previous day's molds

Each 250-pound reef ball will cure for approximately 60 days after they are hatched. We will later introduce larval oysters to the reef ball creating an "instant oyster reef" that would normally take years to generate on its own. The reef balls will later be used in a project in Glebe Bay, located on the South River, to help with shore line erosion while simultaneously providing vital fish and oyster habitat.

Join CBF and our partners, Arundel Rivers Federation and Coastal Conservation Association, for a project that is sure to be a fun time! Please wear closed toe shoes and bring a water bottle and a bagged lunch. Snacks and drinking water will be provided. We will conclude the day with a tour of our Oyster Restoration Facility. All participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

We're sorry, the deadline for registering for this event has passed.
