A Bird's Eye View of the Chesapeake Bay

Teachers attending this 5-day field-based investigation of the Chesapeake Bay Islands will use and practice their observational skills to identify and study birds of the islands and surrounding waters of the Chesapeake Bay from a bird's perspective. Participants will investigate critical habitats of the Bay including beaches, marshes, mudflats, dunes, underwater grass beds, oyster reefs, and forests. Water quality measurements will be collected and analyzed daily to gain information about the Bay's abiotic health. Living resources including blue crabs, oysters, fish, and birds will be collected and/or observed in conjunction with habitat investigations. Participants should bring enthusiasm, binoculars, and an interest in learning and sharing knowledge with others. Prior ornithological experience is not required. The course will provide instruction that integrates classroom and field teaching methods and models meaningful watershed educational experiences (MWEEs). This course may be taken (optionally) for 3 Virginia Commonwealth University graduate credits.

Length & Location: 5 days/4 nights at CBF's Port Isobel Island Environmental Education Program and Fox Island Environmental Education Program.
Cost: $350.
Credit: Maryland teachers are eligible for 3 Continuing Professional Development (CPD) credits for successful course completion. Virginia teachers are eligible for 45 continuing certification credit hours/points for successful course completion.Pennsylvania teachers are eligible for 50 Act 48 credits for successful course completion.Washington, D.C. teachers are eligible for 45 Continuing Education Hours (CEU’s) for successful course completion.
